His residency and fellowship training was at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was named Lucille P. Markey Scholar in Biomedical Sciences and serves as PI of an NIH Center grant directed towards understanding limits and boundaries of gene therapy in genetic diseases. His laboratory has also made important contributions concerning basic aspects of molecular and cellular biology, in particular, as these relate to epithelial protein over-expression and processing within the endoplasmic reticulum, proteasome, and aggresome.

Over the past few years, Dr. Sorscher has made invited symposium presentations at the American Association of Cancer Research, the Anticancer Drug Discovery and Development meetings, the BioEast meeting in Washington, D.C., the American Chemical Society meetings, an international meeting at the Harvard Medical School entitled "Artificial Self-assembling Systems for Gene Transfer," the NIH Genome Institute Symposium Series concerning Human Gene Therapy and the Lucille P. Markey Trust Symposium Series on Molecular Medicine. He served as a member of the study section reviewing grants for the National Gene Vector Laboratory initiative (NGVL) by the National Institutes of Health and served as a permanent member of the Scientific Panel that reviews applications for vector development by the NGVL.
